Winter is in the air, and that means that Basketball season is right around the corner. With a successful season last year the men’s basketball team looks to keep the same success this year. With four returning players the Mavericks have a lot of new faces. The Mavericks are picked fourth in the RMAC coach’s poll behind Colorado Mines, Metro State, and Fort Lewis.

Coming into his 15th year as head coach Jim Heaps looks to continue the success from last season. Associate Head Coach Andy Shantz who is entering his 14th season with the Mavericks assists Coach Heaps. The coaching staff has added two former players to join them on staff; Jase Herl and Sean Flohr are heading into their first year as assistant coaches.

Mesa State has brought in 12 new players to go along with the four returners. Although Mesa’s team is young they look to be a force to mess with, when the season begins. “This year I feel we are really talented and really deep, and we’re just trying to put all the pieces together”, noted sophomore forward Jeff Hart.

Mesa recently had a scrimmage against Central Wyoming where they were able to see what worked and what didn’t. It also gave the newer players a chance to experience what type of level of play is at the Division II collegiate level. “Our Scoring was good, we just need to take care of the basketball better” said Head Coach Jim Heaps.

Hart added “I think the biggest thing is that they pressured out on us a lot and took us out of our offensive rhythm. A lot of teams in the RMAC are going to play that same style of defense, so it was good for us to see it now so we can get better at handling pressure and getting easy buckets out of it. Defensively our size and physicality is what were going to need to be successful on the defensive end of the floor this year. "

With so many new additions to the Mavericks this season there is a significant difference from last years’ team. “We have a bigger and more physical team inside,” said Heaps. “We have a group of players who are mature, have good basketball intelligent, and they are very hard working. Our team chemistry is important and as long as we play together on defense and offense, we will accomplish a lot.”

Having high expectations from last year the Mavs look to prove themselves. Hart says “We're just going to take it day by day, and try to work a little bit harder every day. Obviously last year's team set the bar pretty high for us, so the only thing we can do is just work hard, and I'm confident the rest will take care of itself.”

The Mavericks will tip off the season on November 19th, when they head to Pueblo CO, when they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State University at the Pueblo Al Kaly Classic.
